It seems ...

pretty empty. I think that might have to do with the samples, which imho are pretty poor. it really detracts from the peice. If the samples were better, it could have been a 4 / 9.

The melody is solid, if minimalist.

near the end, the paino rythem peice seems a bit off. Not sure if its timing or what. Kudos to you for actuall yplaying this as opposed to sequencing it, but its still missing something.

Scribbler responds:

My keyboard definitely isn't the best around but it works for what I am trying to complete, for the time being. I agree that the samples could be better but my music tends to be rather minimalist so I a quite content with it at the moment.

It does sound a bit off toward the end and that must have happened while I was exporting the song. Thank you for the review and I appreciate the time you put into writing it.

interesting

I am a big fan of the little notes. IE, the harmony is like 4 notes, one of them discordant, and yet it works just fine. This made me think about this thing i read about music, from a scientist who was studying why we were so entralled by it.

If you scan a brain listening to music, it will light up certain physical locations in the brain, that correspond directly with the notes played. They were able to, using nothing more than a brain scan, reconstruct mozarts symphonies as people were listening to them on a headset.

What is means basically, is you can play a really technical peice, but for most non-musicians, they can't appreciate that. But for people who just listen, its important to take something simple and make it something great. It taps the brain in just the right way, in a primal way. Music takes advantage of the brains ability to make assumtions and generalizations, and you can only make assumptions about something you nominally understand.

That is just a roundabout way of saying, that although i am impressed by technical peices, im more impressed by simple ones woven in complex ways, because if a musician is a story teller, he only matters if he can tell a story that everyone can read.

Well done. 5's and 10's

MJTTOMB responds:

Many thanks! I agree whole-heartedly. If you like simple beauty, may i suggest that you listen to Beethoven's 7th? (the second movement, namely.)

Nice tune

Its not so much the volumes are bad, its that the mastering doesn't put things appropriatly in the high end or low end.

i find that when i play guitar, i get my best sound with all low end and high end. I just cut the middle right out. When you shred you peirce the soul, when you palm, your the legions of hell. The dynamic works out well.

It sounds too flat, and thats one way to fix it. Otherwise this is totally awesome music from which to destroy your enemies to.

Devastus responds:

You're quite right, it's not even hard to notice when I listen carefully that especially the riff guitars have too much middle in the EQ. Thanks for pointing that out :)

Most likely I will be doing a remaster version of this and fix some of the other things at the same time too.

not original.

there is a song on new grounds that uses this same Melody. Its actually pretty decent even though its made from all Garage band samples just cause he mixes them together in a fashion that feels like your looking at 20 diffrent cultures in the same country.

Your not really offering anything here, other than that Melody, and a pretty bad MIDI instrument mixed in. I don't like giving harsh reviews, but your not giving me much here to work on.

2 and 4.

tajjet responds:

Well, the only song I have heard with the same melody is one I have submitted, I would like to know who that artist is.

This could be alot longer

You could totally stretch that metal part out about 2 minutes, and then finish with a 2 minute outro and make it a true epic.

5 of 5 ,, ,but no 10 on review till you make it worthy of z ten with more awesome.

Holywar Has Spoken! Go Forth and Write a Masterpeice!

theinfernumflame responds:

I very well may do that in some form, possibly making it even longer than that. Depends on if I end up making a full song out of it.

Thanks for the review.

No complaints

Its a solid peice. I think a bit of accompaniment would have really helped this shine, but i think it still come out pretty well. Has a sort of Myserious element to it at first, then it gets adventury, almost resolved.

WritersBlock responds:

Yeah, I had originally planned to add an orchestra to it, but I wasn't sure how to approach it. Thanks for the review. It's great to hear the encouraging feedback.

Something about this

was lacking. Im not sure what it is, maybe its just that your style doesn't mesh well with the style you were going for, but it felt disconnnected at parts, like two diffrent songs were taking turns for the spotlight.

Its still good mind you. But its just good and not outstanding, which we have come to expect from you now. Its what you get for setting the bar so high. I wish i had specific crits for you, but really it just overall isn't terribly interesting. Hardly a useful review i know. I'll work on my music vocab and visit this later when i can say something meaningful. :)

MaestroRage responds:

maybe, but it's time to take steps out of the mold you know? I've grown a little tired delivering the same thing again and again. It's true that this may not be the most powerful song, but every new venture starts at step one right :)? I'll get there, one step at a time.

It's still very useful as a review Holywar. It's good to know general reactions to a song, whether it was enjoyable despite being well built, things like that are in the end, more important tome then technical jargon.

Thank you for the review, i'm glad you liked it! I hope my future works will not disappoint you :D!

Under Voted imho

Probally one of NG's best. Though that term is thrown around alot for some real crapolla, this is a super deep and complex peice, with a nice simple melody that ties it together.

My only complaint is in places the sounds are a tad fake sounding. But its barely noticable. I always endevour to leave constructive crits, even on peices that for the most part are perfect.

ParishIsDead responds:

Thank you very much for the perfect 10. Please tell everyone you know about me!!! I am shooting for a perfect 10!!!

Probally more rock than classical.

But i like it. Diffrent.

5 and 9ed good sir.

cazok responds:

Glad you liked it!
I didn't really know what genre to put it in, but now that you tipped me I'll change it.
Thanks a lot for your review and vote

I like this ...

Its diffrent, and has a cool rythm to it. Its a "repetative track" technically speaking, but for some reason the mix of sounds doesn't make it come off that way.

It sounds like the theme song for Dark Imps working magic over a peaceful village. Evil and annoying, but not like the death of the universe type epic, more like "WTF, its a bunch of evil and we have no idea what they are doing!"

shadow6nothing9 responds:

LOL

I love your thought about the whole Dark imps thing and it is repetitive in classical terms but I tried to add as much "Subtle" Sounds to it

Interesting Review.
