Im trying to understand

how this is "Sex with Cows" ... i could imagine alot more horrifying tunes than this ...

It seems ...

pretty empty. I think that might have to do with the samples, which imho are pretty poor. it really detracts from the peice. If the samples were better, it could have been a 4 / 9.

The melody is solid, if minimalist.

near the end, the paino rythem peice seems a bit off. Not sure if its timing or what. Kudos to you for actuall yplaying this as opposed to sequencing it, but its still missing something.

Scribbler responds:

My keyboard definitely isn't the best around but it works for what I am trying to complete, for the time being. I agree that the samples could be better but my music tends to be rather minimalist so I a quite content with it at the moment.

It does sound a bit off toward the end and that must have happened while I was exporting the song. Thank you for the review and I appreciate the time you put into writing it.

I think you

need better instruments. It sounds very fake. The music itself is sound, but especially that rythem peice in the background that doesn't change notes. A cello or violin with some echo/vibreto would really turn this pretty good, into very good.

4 and 8.

HIYA!!!!!

This is the soundtrack i would use if i was bitch slapping ninja's.

interesting

I am a big fan of the little notes. IE, the harmony is like 4 notes, one of them discordant, and yet it works just fine. This made me think about this thing i read about music, from a scientist who was studying why we were so entralled by it.

If you scan a brain listening to music, it will light up certain physical locations in the brain, that correspond directly with the notes played. They were able to, using nothing more than a brain scan, reconstruct mozarts symphonies as people were listening to them on a headset.

What is means basically, is you can play a really technical peice, but for most non-musicians, they can't appreciate that. But for people who just listen, its important to take something simple and make it something great. It taps the brain in just the right way, in a primal way. Music takes advantage of the brains ability to make assumtions and generalizations, and you can only make assumptions about something you nominally understand.

That is just a roundabout way of saying, that although i am impressed by technical peices, im more impressed by simple ones woven in complex ways, because if a musician is a story teller, he only matters if he can tell a story that everyone can read.

Well done. 5's and 10's

MJTTOMB responds:

Many thanks! I agree whole-heartedly. If you like simple beauty, may i suggest that you listen to Beethoven's 7th? (the second movement, namely.)

hmmm

its either to much tremolo, or you didn't tune the guitar. Thats the same sound i get when i play a guitar thats been sitting in a dusty corner for 3 works.

It really hits this in the jugular. You might want to try this again.

Under Rated peice

No complaints. I think its under voted imho.

The begining is awesome, and the part where that creepy sounding violin in is pretty awesome. Definatly sounds like Special forces battle music, a nice cross between modernity and classical, and it gives you the impression of the "Modern" warrior. Someone who carries the values of ancient times, honor, comradery, but is intelligent and driven, utilizing the technological prowess of an entire nation to accomplish its ends ...

decent

Its not bad, but there a few things i think that detracted from this.

I would say clean it up a bit. It disorts a bit. at 1:00, when the background pad goes into overdrive, i think that its going to fast, it sounds like noise, and it doesn;t change at all to match or run counter to other peices. Eventually, it just turns into one solid bleating. I would slow that down, and give it some chord changes.

The Melody is nice, if repetative. Nothing wrong with that, but something that has a simple, reaccuring lead line, needs a shift in the base or harmony to make it interesting.

OPPS!

I thought you got Zero voted, so doing my duty i voted 5 to couteract it. I was wrong, i was actually first vote. So i killed you with kindness. :)

Anyways its an ok peice. I think right before the base comes in it starts to get really repative. i suggest you try this with diffrent instruments that don't "dang dang dang" so much. after a while you can't hear the notes any more. its just constant ringing.

The samples need work. they seem really fake. The base line is to low, like WAAAY to low. It doesn't harmonize well when your baseline and melody are like 6 octaves apart.

it has potential, i would come back to this and being really critical with it.

Well done

The meledoy and construction is near perfect.

As far as constructive crits, the tapping cymbol i think is distracting. I think instead that should be replaced with some kind of Snare solo done at irregular intervals. The Violins pretty much set the rythem, so other than accenting you don't need that type of sound, and i think it detracts from the peice.

I think some improvement in the sampling is needed. Right around :50 to 1:20 it sounds really fake. Though the instruments you used are the same, the way they are mixed makes it sound really authentic through most of it.

Either way, very awesome.
